Definitive Technology Mythos SSA-50 Speaker (Single, Black) Reviews
We finally upgraded our TV to a nice 63" HD plasma TV. I wanted good sound to go with it. This speaker came highly recommended by our local independently owned audio/video store. The sound quality is quite nice and I don't have to have speakers all over my living room. It doesn't mimic true surround sound but it's still pretty impressive. It's a little pricey but it was worth it to me. It is heavier than I would have expected.
I ordered this speaker on the recommendation of a home theater guru. Amazing that amazon sells this speaker in black for $1000 and silver is like half the price. Supply and demand... The grill is black anyway and the silver while great looking is barely visible in my application. This is one hell of a speaker. i have always bought Polk and boston acoustics and these are great speakers. This however, is in a class above. Very crisp sound. I am currently using it with an additional set of rear speakers and a sub. Once the amp was calibrated and all the levels were set appropriately for the speaker positions this speaker really shined. The sound is very full and clear. The construction of this speaker is also exceptional. Full cast aluminum body you can just tell it is high quality. The only down side i would say is the packaging from the factory, not amazon. Because of the weight of this speaker it could have benefitted from more insulation, mine arrived with slight damage on the screen (nothing visible or that warranted return). In talking with my friend who orders and installs these units often, this is a common issue. Otherwise highly recommended.
You won't mistake this for speakers hanging behind you, so I wouldn't get this thinking that you're going to have the ultimate surround sound. However, if you're using a room that isn't optimized for theater anyway, it's a great compromise. Have it underneath a 50" Samsung Plasma, cosmetically looks great. Room is 3-sided (open to the kitchen) and you still get the full effect it's just that it's definitely in front of you. The speaker does a good job of letting the full layers come out. I would say that it's a little mid-heavy, but I didn't do much on setup other than the default delays suggested in the manual. On stereo sources, I use enhanced (includes the surround channels in the mix) to get a full sound. A little tinny w/ just L/R channels. Don't leave out the sub, I have a 10" Energy to get the full depth. Even though not very popular, I think the silver cabinet (solid alumnium) is very striking plus got it for 55% off.
Great buy if you want an all in one solution.
Excellent sound for my room, bedroom is a good 300+ sq feet and it produces sound faithfully. Excellent speech production, great for tv shows and movies.
I purchased this speaker for my father due to the fact that he was unwilling to move his furniture around for a proper surround sound speaker set-up. This speaker definitely gives you spacious sound. The sound is not the same as you'd get from a good 5.1 speaker set-up, but it is very good. It does fill the room with sound. It is also built very well from a great speaker company. It has good clarity and the speaker never seems to have a "fatigued" sound no matter how loud you play it. I preferred this speaker over other surroundbars due to the fact that it will play with any reciever and is not limited to the surround processing found inside many surroundbar speakers. This lets you upgrade to new surround formats as they come out without needing to purchase a new speaker system. The bottom line is this, if you can't have a full 5.1 set-up and still want great sound, this would definitely do the trick.
